“You have to know the past to understand the present,” said the great Dr. Carl Sagan. With The SL Enquirer’s Lanai Jarrico, a glimpse into her past helps you understand exactly how far she has come in virtual world media & it helps you appreciate the scale of where things are now heading.
I met with Lanai in the great seating area of SLEnquirer.com’s office building and we discussed and traded thoughts about her virtual world beginnings. As it turns out, we both have a history in “TSO” (a/k/a The Sims Online) and joked about a common activity that users did then to earn token currency in the game… making pizza with strangers. It never failed; at a ‘team station’ with four-person tables, there was ALWAYS at least one person at your table that had no clue what he or she was doing there and left you with wasted time trying to teach & bring them up to a skill level required to make efficient outcome for everyone.
But that’s where the similarity ends. Where I was stuck behind still trying to make a little dough, in 2004, Lanai broke free from the pie mold and started a news site for that virtual world. She became well known for her work in that area. So much so that in 2005, she was approached by filmmakers from Second Life who were doing a movie about virtual world businesses that wanted to include part of her success story. As a result of that project, she found a new virtual world in Second Life and not long after her arrival, brought the Enquirer she started in TSO to Second Life with her.
While still in TSO, Lanai found that her work often served as a “bridge to help families solve their drama” as she explained. “Mafia controlled a lot of things there,” she added, as the source of much of the dramatic problems users faced.
“The filmmakers flew from Paris and did a documentary about people in virtual worlds while I was very much a newbie running around barefoot in silks,” Lanai clarified. “They went into TSO to find me because people here were talking about it.” While dealing with frequent crashing, Lanai said she was glad to have given Second Life a Second Chance when she did. “It was relentless in the beginning.”
“The next three years we spent building the foundation of The SL Enquirer were very difficult and harsh on the Real Life side,” Lanai recollected. “[The family] just couldn’t understand the importance of it. THEN they were able to see my avatar’s portrait on a wall at an art exhibit in the soho district of NYC.”
.LJ: I went to NYC to meet Eva & Franco – the canvas has since traveled to Switzerland & Italy.
AB: That’s special – where real life meets Second Life.
LJ: Our astrologer Linda Lauren is also a real life friend. I spent my birthday with her one year & did some reiki; even saw one of the 13 crystal skulls in person. OMG that was amazing.
AB: I have a Second-LIfe-that-was-also-a-Real-LIfe-friend that was into Reiki. Before SL, he and I made a podcast which lasted 12 episodes until we figured the only people listening was us.
LJ: Listen, it takes lots of sandcastles being kicked over and carpets being pulled from under you, but as long as you have that strong vision and its something you make sacrifices for, it will go somewhere.
AB: That’s where my name came from – the domain name for the podcast website. When I signed up with this avatar, I figured I wanted a name I already owned the domain for.
LJ: I got a rl Fashion blogger job because of The SL Enquirer’s reputation.
AB: That’s what I’m talking about.
LJ: I’m also in college full time for media and communications.
With a few earlier websites now no longer existing, Lanai feels her strength and staying power with The SL Enquirer is attributed to all the Linden$ and hours spent making things work. To the point where she quit counting. “Just like any business you see where you are in 5 years.”
A couple years ago she began networking with other websites and recently assumed the leadership of Press Pass Media, an inworld association of many SL bloggers. “We all have something great to offer this community and we can only grow with that.” The SL Enquirer has grown to a team of around 38, Lanai counted.
A public relations firm ‘Avatar PR’ will be honoring Lanai Friday night, March 16 at a ceremony on their sim. I look forward to seeing our mutual friends at this event help celebrate the ongoing legacy of Lanai Jarrico. Count me in among the cheerleaders for this fine organization.

Enjoy the show as I know many of you have in past episodes, which also are on the same link if you missed them.

According to this post, CEO Rodvik proclaims after all angles were measured and the build practically impossible, Second Life won’t be offering surnames again any time soon, but instead will work on reducing the number of places where ‘Resident’ appears inworld.
“As I promised if we couldn’t figure out a way that was a win/win for folks who want complete freedom vs. a list of last names, we wouldn’t do it. We couldn’t, so we wont…” Rodvik wrote in his post. So for those of you waiting for your chance to grab a bit of vintage gold, that hope has been dashed, at least for now.
The post also includes hints that they MAY possibly research more on it, but I doubt that will happen anytime soon.
“Thanks again for all these comments and discussion. It’s a pity that the first one couldn’t come up with a clean solution that solved all the world’s problems (or cats’ problems) but it was valuable nevertheless.”
Blue Mars, which has been “on hold” since January, 2011 has a new home.
Ball State University, an institution in Muncie, Indiana in the United States has announced that it has acquired the rights to the Blue Mars virtual world platform from Avatar Reality Inc. The University said that it would concentrate on non-profit commercial applications for the platform. Ball State’s IDIA Lab has a major development on Blue Mars showcasing advanced virtual technology, including a reconstruction of the 1915 San Francisco Worlds Fair. The move should put this relatively unknown American University into the forefront of virtual world development and education.
It is unclear what Ball State University paid, if anything, for the Blue Mars virtual world platform, or if it will keep the current virtual world open for visitation — something I still like to do when I want to revisit some excellent virtual builds such as New Venice. Avatar Reality has not announced if it will continue to develop mobile applications, such as its Blue Mars lite platform which integrates with Google Earth (you can see my video on this application here – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0CgfG7ulGys)
I show two machinima showing Ball State’s IDIA Llab applications in Blue Mars with my avatar, Roger. In the meantime, if you have not yet visited Blue Mars, you can still do so by opening an account and touring this still interesting virtual world — and imagine what could have been if Avatar Reality were able to gain venture capital funding.

I went to follow a lead on some great group gifts from the store :JSC: in Second Life and found a cool public service setup by designer/owner JShawn Thirdborn.
JShawn has both mens and womens clothes, but as you arrive you can smell the testosterone in the air influencing everything. From the color palettes to the free-to-ride motorcycles just outside the front of the store, which serves as ground zero for the sim activity.
Some designers build a separate sim for their store and rent out other space on the sim for various purposes. I like that JShawn has taken “the higher road” and is providing a fun spot for people to play and hang out rather than shop themselves to death. Let’s hope more follow his lead.
The clothes are great too
Longtime bachelor George Clooney refuses to be insulted by rumors about his sexuality because he insists there’s no shame in ‘coming out’.
The Descendants star’s sexual orientation has been questioned by gossips for decades, despite his many high-profile romances, but the actor doesn’t feel the need to clear his name by setting the record straight because he has too much respect for the gay community.
He tells The Advocate magazine, “I think it’s funny, but the last thing you’ll ever see me do is jump up and down, saying, ‘These are lies!’ That would be unfair and unkind to my good friends in the gay community. I’m not going to let anyone make it seem like being gay is a bad thing. My private life is private, and I’m very happy in it.
“Who does it hurt if someone thinks I’m gay? I’ll be long dead and there will still be people who say I was gay. I don’t give a s**t.”
The actor and same-sex marriage supporter will join gay actors Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Matt Bomer for a one-night-only reading of Dustin Lance Black’s Prop 8 play on Saturday (03Mar12) and Clooney admits he’s glad to be a part of the movement.
He adds, “One day the marriage equality fight will look as archaic as George Wallace standing on the University of Alabama steps keeping James Hood from attending college because he was black. People will be embarrassed to have been on the wrong side. So it’s encouraging to know that this too will seem like such a silly argument to our next generation.”
Clooney is currently dating former wrestler Stacey Keibler.
Kay Fairey announces today that she is launching a non-profit group that is dedicated to providing promising starter models with actual runway show experience to initiate their career start.
This group will be led by Kay Fairey and will admit a maximum of 20 new graduate students from any model academy in Second Life to provide real on-the-job runway show experiences which the members can list in their resume when applying for agency castings. Kay stresses that the group is neither an academy nor an agency and will not be affiliated with any particular model academy. All members will be asked to leave after they have three show experiences including shows by other groups in order to open their spots to newer graduates. This activity will continue while Kay is able to provide this service.
Shows will be organized and run by Kay at runways that will be rented with the support of BLVD Agency under BOSL Organization, where Kay is currently CEO. Blackbarbie Bravin and Wicca Merlin, who support this concept, have joined the group as Officers.
There will be a minimum payment made to all models which will be less than the market average for professional models but Kay stresses that she wants future top models to be accustomed to the idea of paid modeling jobs as she is also an avid promoter of paid shows.
“Models spend a lot of money to style the given outfits so that they look good. I think it is only fair that models get some payment even if they will usually spend more than they earn. Free shows with no payments made to models are taking advantage of the money models pay out of their pockets to make the outfit and the agency look good and this is not fair to them.”
The way new graduate students are invited to this group may change in the future but for now only those who have been recommended by various modeling academies will be invited to the group to make sure the promising future top models get priority in taking advantage of this system.
A separate letter will be sent out soon to modeling academy Owners and Directors.
A special thanks goes to Frolic Mills of BOSL Organization for supporting this concept and allowing this group to use his runways as show venues.

Where were you the first time you heard DJ Thorn work his party magic on you? His events are always very very social, well received and leave you smiling even if you came to a club or show not expecting that outcome. A veteran of several years and has seen many clubs and establishments come and go from Second Life, I had a fun conversation with Thorn recently to talk about the life that was and is. And that is not a dangling proposition.
With his homeland in GMT-zone, he has stretched his waking hours to encompass both UK and USA friendly time zones. I know several that do the same thing from UK staying up later, but not very many in the US that wake up five hours early so they can work then go to UK friendly parties. I guess the human body is just predisposed to not want that. With a little brandy in one hand, and his mouse in the other, we greet, meet, then seat.
As we walk around the newly-relocated Casa De Thorn (heavily latin influenced) he says to set my environment to midnight – I do and find the moonlight shining thru the open court center part of the house. Very mood-setting. As he crawls to his home DJ booth we begin to talk about how he began his chosen career. Our conversation is by voice and he said he had been recently caught in the rain, leaving his voice raspier than usual
Things Thorn likes: Smaller guys, Brandy or Black Bitter, Pixlights Chairs, Small balls, Cheeky Monkeys, BLU’s dance bar, Setting up gigs, living the non-SLebrity lifestyle, NoH8.
A sound-quality purist, when I ask what could Linden Labs do to improve the clubbing experience for DJs, Thorn wishes he could raise the effective bit rate to above 128khz but realizes the many limitations outside of the Lab’s control. They are too busy picking on Third Party Viewers right now anyway.
“Some people come on too strong too fast in Second Life and their fire burns out quickly… I don’t fancy myself a SLebrity and I managed to get what I got from over four years of hard work, progressing according to my plan.”
In the future, he just plans to keep doing just what he is doing now and improving his craft. He adds, “Thanks so much for coming to my sets and I hope I pass the audition” – Please reply if you pick up the significance of that quote.
Look for THORN in the gay and fashion events AND on BOSL Radio where his show plays live weekly. Visit http://thebestofsl.com/ to get an idea of when his show airs.

According to sources, the late Quezz Barton’s sim in Inworldz grid is slated for deresolution on March 14, 2012. Staff will retain their respective positions until then to help make the transition for many as smooth as possible. The in-world funeral was held sometime yesterday. No, we were not informed prior.
According to a post on Second Life’s Forum site, Linden Labs has made this announcement regarding changes to its policy on Third Party Viewers (and their developers):
Protecting Second Life users’ privacy and security is a priority, and today, we’ve made some changes to our Policy on Third Party Viewers to strengthen those protections for all users (Section 2.a.iii, 2.i, 2.j).
We’ve also updated the policy to be clearer about the sorts of innovations that developers should work on for their particular Viewers (Section 2.k), and which they should work on in partnership with Linden Lab for all of Second Life. This is so that we can avoid the problems that result when a Viewer changes the way elements of Second Life are defined or how they behave, in such a way that users on other Viewers don’t experience the same virtual reality.
Here are the new sections of the policy:
2.a.iii : You must not provide any feature that circumvents any privacy protection option made available through a Linden Lab viewer or any Second Life service.
2.i : You must not display any information regarding the computer system, software, or network connection of any other Second Life user.
2.j : You must not include any information regarding the computer system, software, or network connection of the user in any messages sent to other viewers, except when explicitly elected by the user of your viewer.
2.k : You must not provide any feature that alters the shared experience of the virtual world in any way not provided by or accessible to users of the latest released Linden Lab viewer.
We encourage Third Party Developers to continue innovating with unique user interfaces, niche features, and ways of interacting with the virtual world, and we look forward to working in partnership with developers on ideas they have for new or improved shared experiences for all of Second Life. We want to incorporate more innovative new features into Second Life to improve the experience for all users, and we encourage TPV developers to submit proposals through our standard process.
Jessica Lyon (Phoenix project spokeswoman) said this on her blog:
This means that third party viewers will no longer be allowed to innovate features which relate to the shared experience unless LL has the features in their viewers first. However LL has indicated an interest and preference in working with third party viewers to develop such features together.
Many feel this will stifle third party features development (including my favorite grouped contacts manager) and undermine much of the work being done towards improving customer experience.

Where were you when the news hit Second Life about Fabrice’s Passing?
I have been thinking much about the jobs lately that the Gay Worlds News staff has been doing since much of the prims in the picture here were rezzed. Six weeks have passed since the truth of Fabrice’s passing became public knowledge and the news I got last night of another GW News writer & colleague having passed really has had me retrospecting all day.
The team that remained with GW News shrank to about half its working size at peak. We expected that for the most part. We still love the kudos we continue to receive as we strive to push forward with out of pocket expenses making this a hobby and not a job by any means. The donation jar I rezzed at the memorial to date has received 769 Lindens in the past five weeks (that we sincerely appreciate), which has to be split six ways as we are no longer salaried workers but migrate towards a revenue sharing business model.
Soon these affiliated ads you see on the site we hope to replace with in-world placements exclusively. If you have a business interest in Second Life or any other grid you wish to associate with our efforts here, please by all means send [email protected] an email along with your donation and ad graphic and we will see to it that your links are properly placed. We don’t have rates set in stone anywhere yet as we continue to gain experience needed to do that efficiently.
We hope you appreciate our continued inspiration to be all that Fabrice wanted us to be. His last hurrah was a brilliant description aimed for staff to understand what he felt was our true mission at GW News, the same mission that currently has us placed well in google search rankings for “Gay News Site” among the major players.
This I feel is the continuing legacy of Fabrice Snook. Just this past Sunday, GW News contributor Eddi Haskell and I discussed the creation of a new Gay Bloggers group which I created on Tuesday. So far 19 blogger members have joined and we hope to gain a few more to make it all that I know Fabrice would love to see for the LGBT community. We teased on the creation of a new Fabrice Snook Foundation who will periodically make contributions to worthy causes that the board feels will honor its namesake. Together we can continue to carry forward his dream; that magical dream that made him a friend to so many that still live and breathe and make Second Life the ultimate celebration that it is.

For the first time in a couple of years, Second Life has edged its way back up into 10th place in Neilsen Ratings. If you don’t already know, Nielsen is the number 1 rated polling organization for home-based entertainment. Many years ago they polled only radio-listening and tv-viewing habits of the American public. A small percentage across the nation would be invited to participate in the ratings system by keeping a written (at first) log of how long and what station you were monitoring at any point in the day. Then after a week’s campaign time, you would return your log by mail to Neilsen and after which they would actually send your family a check for your efforts. The envelope with your invitation would always have either a real minted dime or quarter coin on it, sure to get your attention when you receive cold hard cash in your mailbox. Smart thinking.
How this applies to you, the reader of this article? Well, not much in actuality. It can mean however that ad buyers in the Real World will start to pay more notice to activities going on in this medium and begin to craft ways to take advantage of our ongoing presence in the game. Famous Blogger Hamlet Au of New World Notes first scooped this story and immediately went for the jugular by pointing out the negatives relating to a time when Second Life enjoyed a much greater position in the game. Its no secret to me that Second Life once enjoyed a larger market share of the online gaming sphere. But to me the fact that most of us who call this our second home life like to see some real world recognition that what we are doing matters in the grander scheme of things. We’ll take whatever validation we can get.

Hear Ye Hear Ye!
The Eighth collection for the Men’s Select has some great shop introductions for guys that like to shop and hunt for bargains. You get a bunch of inexpensive deals in one convenient spot along with landmarks to each respective vendor’s store to check out the rest of their wares if you particularly like what you find here. I see something for anyone here, no matter what style of casual dress you prefer. Well done, Conor!
From launch notice:
OK guys (and ladies), you really have to check out this 8th collection of Mens.Select, it really is one of the best collections yet, with a good range of items. Have a look at the photos here or better take the TP over to the Sim and take a look around. Its been good in the last few weeks seeing the Mens.Select members making use of the SIM ( surfing cove, beach club, and Greedy Greedy Table along with plots to rent). Hope you enjoy the 8th collection….

When I am left to my own devices, this is what normally happens. Its also why you don’t normally see me doing fashion spread pieces or a separate blog for stuff. I just need assistance in that category. Be that as it may, next time I put these pieces on my avatar, it will come together better. For Sure. My style card for this look is as follows:
- Ass Kicking Angels’ Leprechaun Jacket & Shirt
- Lashware Saved by the bell Bayside Dirty black jeans & Bayside Tigers grey undies
- Ms. B Designs Model 39 pose
- Heartsick Black Hair Base
- Liderc Male Dog Tags (Dragon)
